How many questions are on the NCLEX-RN, and how long does it take?

The NCLEX-RN has 85 to 150 items and allows up to five hours. Your exam length depends on the adaptive testing rules; the number of questions is not a result.

Does the time limit include breaks?

The five-hour limit includes the introductory screens and all breaks. Build your exam-day plan around that full window, rather than treating five hours as uninterrupted answering time. Check the 2026 Candidate Bulletin for the current appointment rules.

A short daily set can teach a concept. Longer timed practice has a different purpose: noticing when concentration or pace drops. Make room for both without judging every session by its size.

Should I race to finish at 85 questions?

Answer each item carefully and be prepared to continue beyond 85. You cannot choose your stopping point. The computer makes its decision under the NCLEX adaptive testing rules.

Use a practice timer to check your own pace, especially after lengthy cases. It is a feedback tool, not a reason to skip exhibits or abandon an answer you can work out.

Can I go back to an earlier answer?

You cannot return to a submitted NCLEX answer. Read the prompt, inspect the relevant exhibits, make your choice and move forward. A practice product that allows later review is offering a learning feature, not the same exam navigation.

During a timed practice block, write down the topics that felt uncertain after the block ends. Reviewing each explanation during the block changes what you are testing: you are studying with feedback rather than checking sustained exam pace.

What should I do if the exam continues?

Continue applying the same reasoning to the item in front of you. Reaching another question does not tell you that your last answer was wrong or that you have failed.

Plan transport and work commitments so you can use the full appointment window. See the exam-day instructions before booking travel.

How can I put this into my next study session?

Use short shifts for regular learning and separate timed work for pace. The app records the work you complete so you can review it afterwards. See NCLEX RN Exam Practice.
