How should a project manager handle team conflict on the PMP exam?

A project manager should handle team conflict by understanding its cause, listening to the people involved and helping them agree a workable response. Use the facts to decide when facilitation is enough and when safety, misconduct or authority requires immediate action or escalation. Conflict is not automatically a reason to replace a team member.

What should I find out before trying to resolve conflict?

Find out what the disagreement is about, how it affects the work and whether the people involved have already tried to resolve it. A dispute about requirements needs a different response from harassment, a safety concern or competing resource commitments.

An example is two analysts disagreeing about which customer group to interview first. One wants faster feedback; the other needs evidence from a group affected by a compliance requirement. Ask for the facts behind both positions before deciding that one person is obstructive.

Avoid assuming the conflict is personal merely because it is expressed sharply. Listen for a missing decision rule, unclear responsibility or competing objective.

When should the project manager bring people together?

Bring people together when a facilitated discussion can clarify the problem and produce an agreement within their responsibilities. Set a clear purpose for the discussion, use evidence and agree who will do what next.

Simply telling colleagues to be professional may leave the real disagreement unresolved. A useful meeting ends with an action, owner and follow-up point. When the team lacks decision authority, identify who can make the decision instead of asking for an agreement they cannot honor.

A working agreement can help with repeated behavior such as interrupting, unclear handoffs or conflicting review expectations. It should describe observable behavior rather than label people as difficult.

Does servant leadership mean avoiding hard decisions?

No. Supporting the team includes removing obstacles, clarifying accountability and addressing harmful behavior. It does not mean accepting every preference or abandoning delivery responsibilities.

In Scrum, the Scrum Master helps the team’s effectiveness and supports the removal of impediments. The Scrum Guide does not make that role a manager who assigns every task or a passive observer who leaves recurring obstacles untouched.

On the PMP exam, look for actions that help people solve the problem while staying within the role and project context. A collaborative response can still include a clear boundary or a necessary escalation.

When is immediate action or escalation appropriate?

Immediate action or escalation is appropriate when the stated facts require it, such as a safety threat, serious misconduct, legal obligation or an issue outside the team’s authority. Don’t delay required protection while organizing a routine consensus meeting.

Follow the organization’s stated procedure and involve the proper people. In an exam question, use the information given rather than inventing a hidden policy.

Escalation is not automatically failure, and facilitation is not automatically sufficient. The situational-question guide explains why the best answer depends on the decision required now.

How should I review conflict questions during PMP study?

Review which fact made a response appropriate and why the tempting alternatives were too early, too weak or outside the role. Keep knowledge of leadership terms connected to actions you can explain.

Try changing one fact: a normal technical disagreement becomes a safety concern, or the team has already failed to resolve a dependency it cannot control. Ask whether facilitation still fits as the next action.

PMP Exam Coach’s mindset and ranked-answer previews are intended to support that kind of review. Pair them with the risk-and-issue guide when the conflict is part of a delivery problem.
