Am I eligible to take the PMP exam?

You’re eligible to take the PMP exam when your education, professional project-management experience and training meet a PMI eligibility route. Current experience requirements range from two to five years, depending on your education. Experience must fall within the last 10 years, and overlapping project time can’t be counted twice.

How much project-management experience do I need?

You need the amount of experience attached to your education route: five years with a secondary-school qualification, four with an associate’s degree or vocational trade diploma, three with a bachelor’s degree or higher, or two through the listed PMI GAC degree route. Check PMI’s current eligibility page before applying, especially if your qualification has a different name in your country.

These are experience requirements, not a requirement to hold a job titled project manager. The work you performed and the responsibility you held matter. A qualification alone doesn’t replace the required professional experience.

If your route is unclear, ask PMI to confirm it before paying for a course on the assumption that you qualify.

What counts as experience for a PMP application?

Professional work managing projects can count when you were responsible for planning, decisions, delivery and outcomes. Describe what you managed, rather than relying on your title or writing a list of routine duties.

A project has a temporary purpose and a result to deliver. Running the same weekly operational process is different from leading a temporary change to that process. For example, regular warehouse dispatch is ongoing operations; managing a six-month warehouse-system rollout may be project experience.

Write an honest record for each project: its goal, your role, dates, responsibilities and result. Don’t turn a supporting role into a leadership role or invent scope to meet the requirement.

Can I count projects that overlapped?

You can count overlapping projects as separate experience entries, but you can’t count the same calendar time twice toward the duration requirement. If Project A ran from January to June and Project B from April to September in the same year, the combined period is January to September, not twelve months.

Build a month-by-month timeline before completing the application. This makes overlaps visible and helps you check the 10-year experience window. Keep the supporting details for every entry even when some dates overlap.

Adding projects can show the breadth of your work, but it won’t create extra calendar months. If the timeline falls short, gain the missing experience rather than stretching dates.

Do I also need 35 hours of training?

You need to meet PMI’s project-professional training requirement, normally 35 hours; an active CAPM certification also fulfills the listed training requirement. Training and experience are separate parts of eligibility. Passing practice questions doesn’t supply missing project experience.

PMI’s training rules distinguish self-paced courses from live classes and list changes for live classes starting December 1, 2026. Check the provider and completion evidence before enrolling.

PMP Exam Coach is a practice app, not a provider of a 35-hour eligibility certificate. The training-hours guide explains what to check when choosing a course.

What should I do before I start PMP exam practice?

Check your eligibility route, gather your project records and confirm your training plan before committing to an exam date. That prevents a good study plan from running ahead of an incomplete application.

Once those pieces are in place, separate application work from exam preparation. Keep an evening for organizing records and use your regular study sessions for concepts, decisions and review. Your progress in one doesn’t prove the other is finished.
